Hedgehog Class 2021-2022

Welcome to Hedgehog Class!

 

 This term we are learning about The Titanic. We will have the library on a Tuesday, P.E. on a Wednesday afternoon and Forest School on a Thursday afternoon. Please bring your named PE kit to school every Monday, it will stay in school for the week and returned to you on Friday.

 

If you have any questions please feel free to ask Miss Spalding at the classroom door, via Seesaw or write in your child's reading diary.

Today we went on a school trip to the SeaCity Museum in Southampton. We had the best time learning even more about the Titanic and sharing everything we have learnt!

Today we had a visit from Ian, an RNLI volunteer. He told us about how to stay safe near water and how to stay stay in the sunshine!

We enjoyed learning about pitch during our Music lessons this week. We even practised high and low pitch on the glockenspiels!

This week has been ‘Outdoor learning and Science Week’. We have loved taking part in science experiments, forest school sessions and learning all about the artist Brian Wildsmith. We were lucky enough to finish the week with a campfire, toasting marshmallows!

We have had a fabulous day celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee!

We loved taking part in Pyjamarama day! Here we are in our PJs and having the best time learning all about the Evil Pea and Supertato. We even went on a scavenger hunt to find where the evil pea and taken all Supertato’s friends!

In literacy this week, Mr Wood sent a video explaining he was hearing some strange noises down in the Woodland. We went to investigate and spotted some fish that led us to a lost seal!

This term our topic the The Titanic. We are already really enjoying learning all about it and especially enjoyed learning the route it took and the events that took place along the way. Here we are mapping the journey on the playground and then using the Poddley to make the ship!

We absolutely loved Sports Week and especially enjoyed taking part with Sports Day on Friday!

In Forest School this week, we did some ‘worm charming’ and enjoyed learning how to to use the mallets safely!

To celebrate the end of our St Lucia topic, we enjoyed St Lucia day on Friday. We started the day by taking our boarding passes and flying to St Lucia and then enjoyed learning to play the steel drums, creating carnival masks and trying tropical fruits!

What a fantastic trip we have had! We loved going to the Living Rainforest on our first school trip. We saw so many amazing animals and learnt all sorts of facts too!

We loved taking part in Red Nose Day this week. We have raised lots of money and enjoyed taking part in lots of Red Nose Day activities!

This week we have had so much fun taking part in Book Week. On Thursday, we dressed up as our favourite book characters to celebrate World Book Day and it was so much fun. When we came into school are classroom was very messy and we had a note from Winnie the Witch who apologised for her naughty dragon causing the mess! We enjoyed a day full of Winnie the Witch activities, including story time with Winnie herself!

It’s been our block PE week this week in Hedgehog Class and we have enjoyed working on our teamwork skills every afternoon. Here we are working together to get the hoop round the circle without breaking our hand holding and having to untangle ourselves! Miss Spalding was so impressed she even gave us a puzzle piece!

This week we celebrated Safer Internet Day! We learnt about how to stay safe on the internet and talked through our online rules agreed by our school councillors!

On Friday we took part in Number Day! We loved wearing all sorts of numbers and taking part in so many maths jobs!

This afternoon we went to Basing Woods as part of our Forest School session. We had a lovely walk and looked for signs of Spring too!

This week in Literacy we found a chameleon living in the Woodland! We have spent time researching chameleons and then writing letters to the zoo. We decided to pack him up and send him back to the Rainforest. We then read a story about a sloth that also got lost...

Hedgehog Class have had a great last week of term and enjoyed a very lovely final day filled with lots of Christmas fun! We followed the tinsel trail around school which led us to a very special visitor (via Zoom!) in the hall who gave us all gifts, we met lots of farmyard animals and ended the day with a Christmas picnic in the classroom. Merry Christmas to everyone, see you in 2022!

What a wonderful final week we have had. We had a brilliant (and very sunny!) Forest School session this week; making mud pies, bird watching and lots more. Have a great half term Hedgehogs, we are so proud of you!

We had an exciting visit from the Fire Service this week. We learnt all about how to stay safe and about the different emergency services.

This week in Science, we conducted our first experiment to help Mrs Harmon. She needed us to investigate which materials would protect her crackers from breaking in her lunchbox. As Scientists, we made predictions, conducted a fair test and then wrote up our experiment. Take a look at our pictures to see which material protected the cracker from smashing!

We have had another great week in Hedgehog Class! In PE we have been learning the 5 basic gymnastics shapes ready to use the apparatus next week!

This week has been another great week in Hedgehog Class. At the start of the week, we had a visit from Samuel Pepys and then on Thursday we walked to Basing Woods for the first time and explored with our friends!

We have had such a wonderful first week in Hedgehog Class. We have been busy getting to know our new friends, teachers and classroom as well as taking part in lots of fun activities! Well done everyone :-)
