Lion Class 2020-2021

Welcome to Lion Class.

This term we are learning about Castles. We will have P.E. on a Tuesday afternoon and Forest School on a Friday afternoon.

What a fantastic last day we had! Thank you Lions for a brilliant year, have a lovely summer.

This week we created posters all about different sea creatures. We wrote facts about their appearance, what they eat and where they live. We then presented these to the class.

Shadows

Today we learned how shadows are formed. We used opaque, translucent and transparent objects in front of our interactive whiteboard projector and outside to explore how the shadows made. Due to the clouds, we were also able to explore whether it is possible to make a shadow on a cloudy day. We found out we can! We need to bring the object closer to the surface area to create a shadow due to the light not being as strong. We loved exploring shadows this afternoon, here are a few pictures.

We had a fantastic afternoon in Forest School :-) Take a look at all the activities we did.

We have loved creating sprites and backgrounds on scratch this week and we even gave the sprites algorithms! Some of us create our own games and were able to debug these too.

Book Week

This week we had our book week. Angelica Sprocket from the Quentin Blake's book needed our help; she had lost a pocket from her coat (which had some very unusual things in!). We had to solve some maths challenges and write our own rhyme to help her! In the afternoons, we designed and created our own animal puppets that could come out of Angelica's pockets. Here are some of our puppets. Can you identify which animals we have made?

Seaside Music

We loved using the Boom Whackers to sing our seaside song!

Poetry

This week we have been focussing on Poetry. We have enjoyed listening to, reading and creating a range of different poems. Here is a small selection of some of the poems we have written this week. We hope you enjoy them as much as we enjoyed writing them!

Planting sunflower seeds

Our Science topic this term is growing. We have been learning about parts of a plant and what plants need to grow. Because of this, we decided to plant our own seeds! We have each planted a sunflower seed and have given it all the things it needs to grow healthily. Then, as a group, we took away one factor to see what would happen. Two of our groups decided to take away sunlight. Do you think our sunflowers will grow if they do not have sunlight?

Number Day!

On Friday 7th May it was Number Day. Our day was filled with maths and lots of different math challenges. Our favourite math challenges were exploring Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man and thinking of mathematical questions for a given answer. We also really enjoyed dressing up; can you spot your photo?

This week in Forest School we were learning to take a closer look into nature and our environment. We really enjoyed looking closer! We found some interesting objects and insects.

We had so much fun at Sports Day this week!

Seed Germination

On Monday a family from WW2 asked us for our help! They needed to know how to plant vegetable seeds so they could bulk out their rations. So to help us inform them, this week we have been learning about seed germination. We planted our own cress seeds and we have been watching them grow. We then wrote about seed germination after watching a really interesting video.

World Book Day

On Thursday 4th March it was World Book Day. Lion classed celebrated the day by dressing up and completing activities all about Julia Donaldson's book 'The Snail and the Whale'. Our favourite activities of the day were making a whale out of a paper plate, roll a story and stop drop and read.

Forest School Week

We have had an amazing Forest School Week both in school and at home! We have completed a range of Science, Forest School and Art lessons which were all to do with nature and the out doors.

Week 6

What another fantastic week we had at school and at home. This week we used our knowledge of division to help us find a fraction of a number. This was quite tricky, but I am so pleased with how well everyone did. I saw lots of responsible Kangas and Tiggers in Maths this week!

In Literacy, we looked at instructional writing. We recapped all we knew and then used this to help us write a set of instructions about a game we could teach children in WW2. Lots of you chose duck, duck goose and stuck in the mud.

Everyone at Marnel wishes you a safe and happy half term! Don't forget the first week back is Forest School week. We will be completing some Science, Art and Forest School activities. I can't wait, it'll be a fantastic week!

Home Learning

This week we have had another fantastic week of learning at school and at home! In Literacy we have been looking at a recount as some aliens landed in school last week and wanted to learn more about what we do on earth. In Maths we have been learning about division by using the sharing circle method and in our maths meetings we have been recapping symmetry. We have all had a fantastic week; keep up the hard work Lion class.

Week 3

We have had another brilliant week in school and doing home learning. This week we were taking away using a number line and in Literacy we were writing the story of Cinderella in the perspective of the glass slipper! Take a look at some of the super work below that we have done.

We have had another fantastic week of learning at home and at school. Keep up the hard work Lions. I am one very proud teacher!

What a wonderful Science Week we have all had both at school and at home. Well done Lions.

We had a great last day before Christmas! We went on a tinsel trail which lead us to Santa and enjoyed a picnic with our friends.

We loved tree rubbing, painting and bird watching in Forest School this week. Forest School is Lion Class' favourite lesson!

On Friday it was Medieval Day! We loved coming to school dressed up and we enjoyed lots of activities that they would have done in the past.

Over the last few weeks, we have created our own castle pictures. First of all, we mixed our own paints to create a sunset background. Then we used different materials to collage a moat and a hill for our castle to sit on. Finally we drew, cut out and stuck our castle onto our picture. We are so proud of our artwork!

This week in History, we pretended to be spies for Lord Fuddy Duddy. He wanted us to spy on a local castle and retrieve features of this castle. We drew the castle for him and identified the exterior features.

This week in arts week, we have been looking at the theme circus. Today we made our own spiral artwork using crayons, felt tips and paper plates.

This week we have been looking at measure. We really enjoyed measuring objects around the classroom using rulers.

Last week we practised drawing lines, shapes, forms and texture using our sketch pencils. We noticed that if we pressed harder, the line would be darker. We then used this to support us in drawing our own castles. Here are some of our amazing sketches.
