At Marnel Infant School we are passionate about reading. We know that whatever careers our children choose in the future, some of which may not even exist yet, they will always need to read. As teachers we can teach children the skills required for reading but what we want to instil in them is a passion for reading and for them to become readers for life.
Our reading books are categorised by colour band which link to the age related assessment markers for the end of EYFS and KS1. Most publishing houses use this banding system which allows us to hold a vast range of texts, including our recently purchased Badger Books which include many titles that your children will already be familiar with.
As your child progresses through the book bands they will continue to apply the 7 reading strategies taught from Year R, including the use of phonics to decode, using the picture and recognition of high frequency words. We will also continue to broaden their understanding of the text through a range of comprehension tasks and questioning.
As the children progress through the reading book bands they will receive a book mark with their most up-to-date reading target on. The book mark will link to the colour book band they are currently reading with a target that links to either one of the 7 reading strategies or skills in inference and deduction.
