Reading

At Marnel Infant School we are passionate about reading. We know that whatever careers our children choose in the future, some of which may not even exist yet, they will always need to read. As teachers we can teach children the skills required for reading but what we want to instil in them is a passion for reading and for them to become readers for life.

Our early reading books are categorised by phonic phase and link to our phonics scheme Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised. The children will progress through the reading books in line with their phonic teaching and knowledge, taking home a phonic reader, sharing book and book to share from the library. We have a vast rage of texts available to the children, including our recently purchased Badger Books which include many titles that your children will already be familiar with.

As your child progresses through the books they will continue to apply the 7 reading strategies taught from Year R, including the use of phonics to decode, using the picture and recognition of high frequency words. We will also continue to broaden their understanding of the text through the teaching of prosody (using your voice to convey emotion and to engage the reader) and a range of comprehension tasks and questioning.

As the children complete the phonic readers and are fluent readers, they will continue to progress through the reading book banded texts and will receive a book mark with their most up-to-date reading target on. The book mark will link to the colour book band they are currently reading with a target that links to either one of the 7 reading strategies or skills in comprehension including inference and deduction.
